Data Privacy Policy
What Cairn collects, why it needs it, and the choices you have. Here is the short version first, then the full policy.
Draft. This policy has not been reviewed by an attorney yet and may change. If this summary and the full policy ever differ, the full policy is what counts.
The short version
- We only ask for what we need. Your name and email (a phone number is optional), how you were related to the person who died, and a few basics about them, such as their name, date of birth, state, and when and where they died. These details are asked only when a step needs them. We also keep your task list and your conversations with Cairn.
- Some things we never ask for. No Social Security number, not even the last 4 digits, no full bank or card numbers, and no cause of death. If you type one of those numbers into a chat, Cairn hides it right away and does not save it.
- Your documents stay locked up. You can keep papers like a will, a death certificate, or insurance forms in your case's encrypted document vault. Cairn does not read them beyond what you tell it, and you can view, download, or delete them at any time.
- You decide who else sees your case. You can invite a co-executor, spouse, attorney, or fiduciary, choose what they can see, and remove them at any time.
- We never sell your information or use it for ads. Not yours, and not information about the person who died. The few companies that help run Cairn (for payments, messages, sign-in, hosting, and the AI) must promise the same thing. The payment company never learns anything about your case.
- Your voice stays on your device. If you speak instead of type, your words are turned into text on your own device. The recording itself is never kept or sent to anyone.
- You are in control. A "What Cairn knows" page shows everything Cairn keeps, in plain words. You can download all of it, or delete your account, at any time, for free. After you ask to delete your account, you have 3 business days to change your mind, then it is gone for good. The only thing kept longer is your subscription and billing records, which prove you agreed to the charges.
- No advertising cookies or tracking. Cairn uses only the cookies it needs to keep you signed in, plus limited private analytics that never include your case. If your browser sends a "do not track" signal, Cairn turns those analytics off for you.
- If something goes wrong, we will tell you. If your information is ever exposed, we will tell you what happened, what was involved, what we are doing about it, and what you can do. The policy sets firm deadlines for this, such as 60 days at most when ID numbers, health-related details, or vault documents are involved.
- Help is always one step away. Cairn is an AI guide, not a person. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 any time. Cairn never contacts anyone else on your behalf. Cairn is for adults 18 and older.
